Open Hand Publishing Inc. was founded by P. Anna Johnson in 1981 with the objective of publishing books for adults and children that promote positive social change, respect and understanding between all people, and nurture a positive attitude between people of diverse ethnic groups. Open Hand publications were intended to fill the gaps at a time when too many writings by and about people of color were rejected by corporate publishing houses that said there was no market for them.
Open hand was sold in 2000. Most of the books published prior to that are still in print and can be viewed at Rights to The Making of Black Revolutionaries by James Forman were sold too the University of Washington Press which has published that book.
