A young couple decides to migrate from Boston to Australia in order to escape immanent nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. After only a few short months in Sydney, it comes as a surprise to meet others who have also recently moved from North America and Europe for the same reason. They learn there are hundreds, perhaps thousands who have migrated to Australia and New Zealand in search of a safe place to live. The Australian press refers to them as nuclear migrants. Australia Years is the story of a young woman's search for meaning in a strange land. Personal events unfold against the historic backdrop of the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the women's liberation movement.
